Est. 2010
A couple of college sweethearts made good. Married in 2010, we’ve waded through a decade+ of life together: three cities, multiple jobs, and big dreams (some made real and others still in process). Looking for a break from the corporate hamster wheel, we decided it was time to take on an extended adventure. But, what adventure do we go after?
RV’ing? Backpacking? Buying a small cabin and becoming hermits?
No, these former landlubbers are taking to the high seas.
The cold water of Lake Michigan seduced us into #boatlife, and we’ve been in love ever since. Our first boat was M/V Alpha Waves, a 1995 Larson 310 Cabrio. Alpha Waves was a beautiful starter boat that could handle the unpredictable lake. Yet, the roar of the twin engines put a strain on our eardrums and pocketbook (try filling up a 120-gallon tank a few times a month… ).
Some sailboat crewing and ASA certifications later, and we decided it was time to transition to a sailboat. Our sailboat of choice is the 1980 Gulfstar 50 Ketch (learn more about it here).
Thank you for joining us on the adventure!
Kirstin - The Admiral
A book and a beach. There are few things in life can top that combo, just ask her.
After a suburban childhood filled with friends, water polo, and synchronized swimming, she took her talents to the University of Missouri, and eventually returned to St. Louis with a degree and a husband.
She helped put me through law school by putting her degree to work in corporate finance. With some real-world experience in her pocket, she returned to the classroom to snag an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and took a job in the wild world of business consulting.
From classroom to finance department back to the classroom and then into consulting, my brilliant wife has cultivated a successful career.
In 2020, she turned her attention to being out on the water. We purchased a motor yacht for use on Lake Michigan and we fell in love. So much so, that she jumped at the idea of buying and refitting a sailboat.
Here’s to her (our) next great adventure!
(Andy here, of course, I was going to brag about my brilliant, funny, beautiful wife!)
Andy - The Captain
Expanding horizons. If there is a slogan for this season in his life, that is it.
Growing up in rural Missouri, the world was like the night sky. Beautiful to look at from a distance, but not a thing that people actually visited.
Every move since high school brought new people and new experiences. Starting in a town with a population of 4,000, getting to a metropolis of 9,500,000 brought the stars to earth. Then came trips to Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican, South Africa, Germany, and France. He learned that the world is a massive place with seemingly infinite places to explore.
Then came his first boat, an rapidly deepening love of the water, and finally the plan to set off on a great adventure with his pride and joy and spouse, Kirstin.
Let’s go find out what is beyond the next horizon.
