Pre-Refit Boat Tour
Every boat is a floating compromise. Space v cost. Form v function. There give and take everywhere.
Our must-haves included two heads, two cabins, and an adequate galley layout. A workable engine room was a lovely bonus.
Obviously, we would have loved to jump straight into a catamaran (ala the Wynns), but that was out of our budget.
After weighing the pros and cons of many monohulls, we liked a lot about the Gulfstar 44 and Gulfstar 50. Their layouts are remarkably similar, and they have reputations as tough boats. The main difference is simply that the layout of the 50 is about 15-20% bigger in every direction than the layout of the 44. After touring both boats, we firmly believe the 50 was the right choice!
Working from aft to fore, the Gulfstar 50 has an aft master cabin big enough to fit a queen-sized bed while still having ample room to stand and walk. It also has lots of storage with a full-sized hanging locker and no fewer than 5 draws.
The ensuite head (bathroom) includes a separate shower (a big deal in a boat), sink, and manual pump toilet (one of the things that is 100% getting updated).
Heading out of the aft cabin, there is a short hallway with access to more storage, the electrical panel, and the engine room.
The hallway empties out into the L-shaped galley. We originally wanted a u-shaped galley, but this one will work just fine. It has loads of counter space (seriously, almost as much as our current house), a deep sink, microwave, built-in refrigeration, and great storage.
The salon has a 10 ft settee (aka, a couch) that converts into double sea berths. There is also a large booth with a partially collapsible table surrounding the mast. There is a bookshelf, lots o cabinets, and storage under all of the seating.
The v-berth is surprisingly large. The berth (bed) is 6’ 6” long and can easily sleep two. The storage is sufficient, if not ample, and there is direct access to the forward head from the cabin. It will be a good space to host friends and family.
On deck, there are s couple of great lazarettes, a spacious center cockpit with full enclosure, and a Lofrans windlass. In the coming months, Magic Dragon is going to transform from a boat to our boat. We hope you join us along the way!
Much Love,
