Birthday in Chicago & Changing Plans
When we purchased our 50-foot sailboat, Magic Dragon, in late 2021, we knew that our early 2022 calendar was jam-packed with some things that we could not move around and other things that we did not want to move around.
Accordingly, the plan was always to refit our future floating home in various stages. For some of the stages, we would supervise contractors from afar in Chicago, and for other stages, one or both of us would spend a lot of time in Florida getting our hands dirty.
Recent changes to our boatyard’s policies forced us to shift the refit schedule around. Under the new rules, the boat has to stay in “storage” for at least four months. During these storage months, the owners are not allowed to do extensive work on the boat themselves, but you can hire contractors to work on the boat.
In response to these new rules, we have shifted the work schedule by grouping all of the contractor projects together during the storage months and will reserve the remaining projects for later this fall when we are at the boat full-time.
Since we no longer need to be in Florida constantly during the summer months, it makes sense for us to stay in Chicago while working full-time to fund the refit. Operating mostly from Chicago also allows us to deal with other logistical issues more easily (selling our powerboat, dealing with our house and cars, etc.).
Of course, one or both of us will make trips to Florida periodically to check in on and oversee the contractors’ work.
In the meantime, we are going to enjoy Chicago, starting with a staycation for Kirstin’s birthday! In this episode, we enjoy the Jackson Park Cherry Blossoms, the Garden of the Phoenix, the Skydeck at the Willis (Sears) Tower, fantastic food, and see Moulin Rouge! The Musicial. It was a fantastic birthday celebration!
