A little of everything
If you are open to it, life will give you a bit of everything. And life on the water is no exception. In fact, it’s often said that the cruising life gives you both higher highs and lower lows than land life. I do not know if that is true, but this week, our life on the water gave us a bit of everything.
We’ve been hanging out in and around the fantastic Spanish Wells in Eleuthera, but it’s time to move on. Eleuthera is a large island, and we want to see as much of it as possible. But, to get from Spanish Wells at the far north end of the island to any of the famous spots further south, you have to traverse the infamous Current Cut.
Current Cut is a narrow channel - approximately 300 ft wide - that allows water to pass from the Bite of Eleuthera to the deeper Northeast Providence Channel. As the tides pass back and forth through the cut, the current dramatically increases, flowing at up to 8 knots.
Given that our trusty sailboat can only motor at 7.5-8 knots, it is crucial that we time our passage through perfectly.
And once we get through Current Cut, we have a measly 16 miles to another tricky passage. If the 300 ft wide Current Cut is narrow, the 70 ft inlet to Hatchet Bay is a pinhole.
Attempting these two navigational hazards on the same passage is one of the more intricate pieces of boat maneuvering we have ever attempted.
Fingers crossed!
Much love,
Kirstin & Andy
